Congress spokesperson Londhe targets Maha govt over its failure to provide adequate assistance to distressed farmers

Mumbai, Sep 15 (UNI) Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee senior spokesperson Atul Londhe today alleged that even as farmers were facing financial distress due to insufficient rainfall, the state government had failed to provide adequate assistance.
"Farmers in Maharashtra are facing a severe crisis due to inadequate rainfall, with the Kharif season badly affected and concerns mounting over the prospects of the upcoming Rabi season," he said.
He further said the state had received around 25 per cent less rainfall than the average this year, resulting in damage to standing crops in several regions. As a result, he said that farmers are facing financial distress and alleged that the state government has failed to provide adequate assistance.
While farmers are facing a serious crisis, not a single minister of the Mahayuti government has visited farmers in the fields to assess their situation, Londhe said in a jab.
He said that production of soybean and cotton was expected to decline sharply due to inadequate rainfall, while crops such as tur, moong, urad, pomegranate, banana and guava had also been affected. Several parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada are facing drought-like conditions, he said.
Londhe expressed serious concern over declining water levels in dams saying that it had raised concerns over the availability of water for Rabi crops. Water supply had also become irregular in some municipal areas, while the shortage of fodder and drinking water for livestock was emerging as a serious concern, he pointed.
"Farmers are worried about how they will meet their children's educational and examination expenses during the festive season," he said.
Londhe alleged that government schemes and assistance measures had failed to provide adequate relief to farmers. He also questioned the effectiveness of the government's loan waiver measures.
He further alleged that the BJP-led Mahayuti government was diverting attention from crucial issues such as inflation, unemployment, law & order and farmers' problems by focusing on disputes between Marathas and OBCs and between Hindus and Muslims.
