Election roll revision row: Congress demands 60-day extension, cites severe tech glitches, overburdened BLOs

Mumbai, Sep 29 (UNI) Accusing the state election machinery of forcing a massive disenfranchisement wave under the guise of an administrative clean-up, Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal Tuesday launched a blistering attack on the poll panel, demanding an immediate two-month extension to the rapidly closing voter registration window.
Filing a formal representation with Chief Electoral Officer S Chockalingam, the opposition leadership warned that technical blackouts, administrative red tape, and severe holiday-season disruptions have effectively locked millions of citizens and young voters out of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Citing an unviable cutoff date of October 12, the Congress has demanded a mandatory 60-day extension to ensure exhaustive registration coverage across the state. Highlighting a glaring disconnect on the ground, the party noted that out of a staggering 1.54 million voters on the ASD (Absent, Shifted, Dead) list and 4 million newly eligible youth, a mere 390,000 have managed to file Form 6.
The petition underscores severe portal crashes during online submissions, uncorrected printing errors on physical Form 6 templates, and widespread confusion over Marathi-English name transliterations.
With Booth Level Officers (BLOs) buckling under door-to-door notice pressure, school half-yearly examinations disrupting teacher-BLOs, and the peak Navratri festival underway, the administration's timeline has been dismissed as entirely impractical.
Pointing to the alarming persistence of duplicate entries despite filtration software—including over 25,000 flagged duplicate names submitted directly to the Nagpur Collector—the party has demanded strict reverification and the daily assembly-wise publication of incoming Form statistics, mirroring models adopted in Delhi.
