Maha: Fadnavis hits back at Rahul Gandhi over Nandigram arrest row

Nagpur, Sep 19 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today strongly rebutted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s allegations of “political revenge” and “murder of democracy” over the arrest of Congress candidate Milan Pradhan ahead of the Nandigram bypoll in West Bengal.
Responding to Gandhi’s remarks, Fadnavis questioned the basis of the Congress leader’s criticism and said the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha should first introspect before accusing others.
Pradhan was arrested by West Bengal Police in connection with multiple cases linked to the 2007 Nandigram anti-land acquisition agitation.
According to police, the action was taken on the basis of a pending warrant in cases involving charges such as rioting, murder and criminal intimidation.
Gandhi, in a post on X on Friday, had alleged that Pradhan’s arrest ahead of the October 6 Nandigram by-election was politically motivated and amounted to an assault on democratic values.
Addressing reporters here, Fadnavis said questions should be raised about the nature of the charges against the Congress candidate rather than the timing of the arrest.
He also asked whether political affiliation should shield an individual from legal action.
“I want to ask Rahul Gandhi on what charges his candidate has been arrested. Does he endorse those allegations? Should a person accused of such offences be spared merely because he belongs to the Congress? Can such a system function in the country?” Fadnavis said.
The Chief Minister further remarked that Gandhi should examine his own position before levelling accusations against others.
Pradhan, who has reportedly been named in more than a dozen cases related to the Nandigram land agitation, was arrested from a hotel in Chandipur in Purba Medinipur district.
