Political tensions rise in Maha as Shinde appeals for calm amid Jarange’s Mumbai march, backs UCC

Mumbai, Sep 15 (UNI) Maharashtra’s political tensions intensified as Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde appealed to Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil to reconsider his ongoing march towards Mumbai amid the peak of the Ganeshotsav celebrations, while also backing the possibility of implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state.
Addressing the media, Shinde asserted that the state government has taken several steps to address the demands of the Maratha community, including providing 10 per cent reservation, clearing thousands of pending appointments and increasing the financial limits of the Annasaheb Patil Economic Backward Development Corporation.

He urged Jarange Patil to call off or reconsider the Mumbai march, warning that it could lead to severe traffic congestion and create difficulties for citizens during the Ganesh festival, when large numbers of devotees are travelling across the city and the state.
Shinde said the government is committed to addressing community grievances through dialogue and administrative measures, and appealed for cooperation to ensure that the ongoing festivities are not disrupted.
On the issue of the Uniform Civil Code, Shinde said the Mahayuti government is closely examining its implementation in Maharashtra, stressing the principle of equal rights for all citizens. He also invoked the ideological legacy of Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray while outlining his position on the issue.
Taking aim at the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction, Shinde also referred to the CBI’s FIR in connection with the death of Disha Salian, alleging that the development has caused concern within the Thackeray camp. He maintained that investigating agencies should be allowed to conduct their inquiries independently and without political interference.
The state government is witnessing dual challenge of tackling to the long-standing Maratha reservation issue while ensuring uninterrupted civic and administrative functioning during the Ganeshotsav period.
Shinde reiterated that the government has consistently taken steps to resolve community-related grievances and called for cooperation between protesters, political parties and the administration.
Meanwhile, security and administrative authorities are closely monitoring developments in Mumbai and Jalna amid the continuing mobilisation over the Maratha reservation issue.
