VHP seeks removal of Maharashtra Minority commission chief over Abu Salem meeting

Nagpur, Sept 17 (UNI) The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has demanded the removal of Maharashtra State Minority Commission Chairman Pyare Khan over his alleged meeting with convicted gangster Abu Salem at Nashik Road Central Jail and sought a probe into the circumstances surrounding the visit.
A VHP delegation submitted a memorandum to the district administration here, demanding Khan's dismissal and a thorough inquiry into the alleged interaction.
According to the VHP, the meeting with Salem, who is serving a sentence in connection with the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, was improper and raised questions over the conduct of a person holding a constitutional position.
The controversy emerged following reports that a team from the Minority Commission had visited Nashik Road Central Jail and met Salem.
During the interaction, Salem reportedly raised issues related to his imprisonment and sought consideration of his request for premature release.
The Minority Commission, however, defended the jail visit, saying such inspections were part of its mandate and were intended to review grievances of inmates belonging to minority communities.
The VHP contended that any support for Salem's request for premature release was unacceptable in view of his conviction in the serial blasts case.
It urged the Maharashtra government to take immediate action against Khan and order a detailed inquiry into the visit, including its purpose and the issues discussed during the meeting.
The matter has since sparked political reactions in the state, with several quarters seeking an explanation from the government regarding the objectives and findings of the prison visit.
