Jarange Patil ends hunger strike, gives Maharashtra govt 90 days to act on Maratha demands

Mumbai, Sep 17 ( UNI) Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange Patil on Thursday ended his indefinite hunger strike after nearly 20 days following talks with a delegation of the Maharashtra government at Patoda in Beed district.
Jarange agreed to suspend the agitation after Revenue Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, Minister Dada Bhuse, MLA Prasad Lad, MLA Suresh Dhas and senior administrative officials held discussions with him early Thursday morning.
Following the talks, Jarange gave an ultimatum to the government 90 days to take concrete action on his key demands concerning Maratha reservation.
He, however, made it clear that the agitation has only been suspended and not called off permanently, warning that he would resume the protest and mobilise supporters towards Mumbai if the government failed to take substantive action within the three-month deadline.
The talks began around 0530 hours, with the government delegation urging Jarange to end his fast in view of his deteriorating health and assuring him that his major demands could be taken forward through the prescribed legal and administrative process.
Jarange has been travelling towards Mumbai from Antarwali Sarati in connection with his agitation, but his health had reportedly deteriorated during the course of the protest. He was staying at Patoda when the government delegation met him.
A major point of discussion includes the implementation of historical Gazetteer records and the issuance of Kunbi certificates to eligible members of the Maratha community.
Jarange has been demanding action based on historical records, including the Hyderabad and Satara Gazetteers, to establish the eligibility of Maratha applicants for Kunbi certificates, which would enable eligible beneficiaries to avail themselves of benefits under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.
The meeting also discussed Maratha-Kunbi records, including Jarange's demand for clarity and written assurances from the government on the reported 58 lakh Kunbi records and their use in the certificate-issuing process.
According to information available after the talks, the government indicated a positive approach towards undertaking the necessary procedure for implementation of the relevant Gazetteer records. The discussions also covered administrative and legal procedures concerning Maratha-Kunbi documentation.
The dialogue assumes significance as tensions that increased in recent days over Jarange's proposed march towards Mumbai and his demand for immediate action on reservation-related issues, has subsided .
The government delegation led by Vikhe Patil travelled to Patoda to hold direct talks with Jarange and persuade him to withdraw his fast, particularly in view of his health condition.
The suspension of the hunger strike brings a temporary halt to the agitation, but the broader Maratha reservation issue remains unresolved. Jarange has linked the next phase of his movement to the government's progress over the next 90 days.
The government will now face the task of addressing the demands within the legal, administrative and constitutional framework during the three-month period. The implementation of historical records, the process of issuing Kunbi certificates and issues concerning OBC reservation are expected to remain at the centre of the discussions.The next 90 days will therefore be crucial as the government works on the demands and Jarange Patil monitors the progress before deciding the next course of his agitation.
