Social media spat ignites riot in Washim

Mumbai, June 20 (UNI) A dispute over a social media status escalated into a violent mob clash in Washim district late Thursday, leaving many people injured and damaging properties.
The incident erupted around 9:30 pm in Vyawahare Galli when opposing groups armed with swords, rods, stones, and bricks engaged in brutal street fighting. An official on Friday said the situation is under control and peaceful.
Witnesses reported chaotic scenes as assailants shattered a medical shop's signboard and vandalized motorcycles, including one belonging to a local resident. "People were screaming while hurling stones and wielding weapons," the resident told media, adding that perpetrators fled towards Rajiv Chowk before the police intervened.
He urged authorities to curb recurring violence in the area.
The Washim police are reviewing CCTV footage to identify perpetrators, though the specific content of the social media post remains unconfirmed. Preliminary reports indicate the altercation caused significant public disruption and property damage.
The incident occurred amid rising communal tensions across Maharashtra. Official data reveals 823 communal incidents recorded statewide this year, fueled by controversies including demands to demolish Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's grave and rampant social media misinformation.
Affected districts include Nandurbar, Pune (Rural), Ratnagiri, and Sangli.
Authorities continue to investigate the Washim incident as tensions persist.
