Bangladesh crackdown: 290 opposition supporters detained, says HRW

Dhaka, Oct 6 (UNI) Bangladeshi police detained around 290 supporters of the left-wing Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) during a meeting in Dhaka on September 26, in what Human Rights Watch (HRW) described as the latest incident raising concerns over political and civil rights in the country.
According to HRW, members of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s youth wing, the Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, alleged that the gathering was a “secret” meeting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, which is currently banned.
A court subsequently remanded 27 of those detained after allegations that they had chanted “Joy Bangla” (“Victory to Bengal”), a slogan associated with the Awami League, HRW said.
