Rubio urges Europe to shoulder more defence burden during Greece visit

Athens, Oct 7 (UNI) European countries must shoulder a greater share of the responsibility for defending their own continent, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday, as Washington urged its European allies to strengthen defence commitments and deepen military cooperation.
Speaking in Athens during the sixth round of the Greece-U.S. Strategic Dialogue, Rubio praised Greece for meeting NATO defence-spending commitments and highlighted expanding security, energy and intelligence ties between the two countries.
“One thing we agree on, for example, is that the nations of Europe need to take on a greater share of the burden in defending their continent, and Greece is doing just that,” Rubio told reporters alongside Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis.
