Phnom Penh, May 5 (UNI) Cambodia recorded about 20,000 new cases of cancers, with nearly 14,000 deaths a year, Prime Minister Hun Manet said here on Monday.
"The number is high if compared to our country's population of 17 million," he said in a speech during the launch of the National Cancer Control Plan 2025-2030.
The plan was designed to reduce new cases and deaths from cancers, he said, adding that it would improve access to quality cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment and care.
The prime minister said that to reduce cancer risk, people should focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, grains, and protein, and engage in regular physical activity.
He also advised relevant authorities to regularly check on the safety and quality of food, fruits and vegetables in order to prevent chemical contaminants that could potentially cause cancer.
Health Minister Chheang Ra said liver cancer is the most common type of cancer among people in Cambodia, followed by lung, breast, colorectal, and cervical cancers.
"About 38 people die of cancers every day in Cambodia," he said.
In the Southeast Asian country, the Luong Me Hospital, located in the southwestern outskirts of Phnom Penh, is the largest facility specializing in cancer treatment and care.
