Saudi Arabia suspends air operations in Riyadh after Houthi attack on Khalid International Airport leaves several injured

Riyadh, Oct 10 (UNI) Several people have been injured in a fresh attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, prompting Saudi Arabian authorities to suspend operations days after a series of strikes claimed by Yemen's Houthis.
The Saudi Civil Aviation Authority announced the suspension on Saturday following the attack. Dozens of people were reportedly wounded.
The US Embassy in Saudi Arabia said it was "aware of attacks on King Khalid International Airport" and urged American citizens to avoid the airport and surrounding areas. Several Western embassies also warned their citizens to stay away from the facility.
Several Gulf airlines cancelled flights to and from Riyadh, with Kuwait Airways citing the "security situation". Flight-tracking data from Flightradar showed incoming flights being diverted or cancelled.
The latest incident follows two attacks on the airport on Thursday that killed three Saudi nationals, including a pilot, according to Saudi authorities. The Iran-backed Houthi movement claimed responsibility for those strikes.
Three other people were killed in attacks on two Saudi airports on 6th and 7th October, according to authorities.
The suspected latest attack comes amid an escalation in fighting between Yemen's Saudi-backed government forces and the Houthis, who control much of the country's north-west.
The Houthis say their attacks on Saudi Arabia are retaliation for the kingdom's support for government forces in Yemen's civil war.
The conflict has intensified following a Houthi offensive along strategically important stretches of Yemen's Red Sea coast, including the port of Mokha near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a vital chokepoint for international shipping.
Yemeni pro-government forces have since claimed to have secured the strait at the southern end of the Red Sea.
A Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015 to prevent the Houthis from taking over the country from its internationally recognised government. Years of air strikes and ground fighting contributed to a humanitarian crisis that left hundreds of thousands dead.
A temporary ceasefire brokered in 2022 began to unravel in July, when the Houthis declared a "maritime embargo" against Saudi Arabia and launched missile and drone attacks on airports, oil facilities and tankers in the Red Sea.
The group said its campaign was in response to what it described as a prolonged Saudi blockade and an air strike on Sanaa airport.
