Trump repeats claim of settling eight wars in renewed push for Nobel Peace Prize

Washington, Oct 8 (UNI) US President Donald Trump renewed his push for the Nobel Peace Prize on Wednesday, reiterating his claim of settling eight wars and suggested that it would be a "great discredit" to the Norwegian Nobel Committee if it did not honour him.
Speaking to reporters at the Oval Office ahead of Friday's announcement of this year's award, Trump said "I've done stuff that nobody else has ever done. I'm not bragging, I'm just telling you the facts. No president has probably ever settled any wars. I settled eight wars."
He said his efforts to broker peace were continuing and hinted that another conflict could soon be resolved, apparently referring to the US-Iran war, which has entered its eighth month.
"They have a reputation for maybe not giving it to people like me. But, whether I get it or not, I have done far more," Trump said. "I think it would be a great discredit to them."
Trump also criticised former President Barack Obama, who was awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize less than a year after taking office. Trump claimed Obama "didn't do anything" and "still doesn't know what he got it for".
Obama was awarded the prize for his efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation, including improving relations between the US and the Muslim world.
Trump also referred to last year's Nobel laureate, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, claiming she had told him he deserved the prize and handed it to him during a meeting at the Oval Office.
"I was very honoured to receive it indirectly," Trump said, quoting Machado as saying that "nobody in history deserves it more than President Trump".
Trump frequently cites his claim of having settled eight wars as evidence of his diplomatic record. However, several of the conflicts included in his tally did not involve sustained armed conflict. The Iran-Israel war, which he has also cited, remains ongoing.
Trump has also made little progress towards ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, while a ceasefire has reduced fighting in Gaza although Israeli strikes and civilian casualties have continued.
His claims of peacemaking have also received heavy criticism from opponents who have pointed to his decision of launching full-blown military action against Iran, after 2024 campaign pledge to keep Washington out of prolonged conflicts.
Taking a dig at his predecessors as he left Washington for a campaign rally in San Antonio, Texas, Trump claimed he could have taken action against Obama, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton but chose not to.
He also repeated his assertion that the Iran war had already been "won", though admitted it was not "fully" won.
"It's a war that's been won from the standpoint of what we have to do," Trump said, adding that the US had eliminated Iran's nuclear capability and that its military had been "wiped out".
He said the conflict would end "very quickly" and predicted that oil prices would fall sharply once it did.
