Nitish Govt. shattered education system in Bihar: Digvijay

Patna, June 29 (UNI) The Congress party on Sunday alleged that the education system in Bihar, a place once known as a center of learning, is now in a tattered condition due to insensitivity and negligence of the Nitish Kumar government.
Former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and Congress MP of Rajya Sabha Digvijay Singh told media persons here that Bihar was once the centre of high quality education and students from several countries would come to the state's Universities like Nalanda.
"A state having a glorious past in quality of education, was ruined by present dispensation in the state, leaving youths with no option but to migrate to other states for higher studies and livelihood," he added.
"As per report of school education, released for the year 2023-24, drop out rate is highest in the country while a large number of schools have no basic facilities like electricity, computer, library and even sufficient number of teachers", Congress leader pointed out and added that there was no electricity in 16,529 out of the 78,120 schools while computers were available only in 5,057 of 78,120 government schools.
There were 2,637 schools in Bihar where only one teacher was posted and 2.91 lakhs students were enrolled in these schools, he revealed. On the other hand, 544 teachers were posted in117 schools where no student was enrolled, he pointed out.
"Drop out rate at primary level is 8.9 percent, upper primary level (25.9 percent) and at secondary level, it is 25.63 percent in Bihar, which is highest in the country", Singh said adding that 82 percent of total 94,686 schools in Bihar were government schools. Nitish Kumar government claimed to spend highest amount in education sector but it was being siphoned off due to corruptions, he remarked.
Congress leader said that there where only 37 universities in Bihar having 1092 college and 315 stand-alone institutions. Number of educational institutions for higher education was 1387 and it was for below in proportion of population of the state he added. There were only seven collages per 1 lakh population in Bihar, far below than national average of 30 colleges covering the same size of population, he pointed out.
"Youths of Bihar are badly affected due to gross mismanagement in conducting examination which jeopardized their future", Singh said adding that not a single examination was conducted in past few years, which could be described as fair and transparent. Competitive examination for recruitment of constables, teachers and administrative officers were also marred by corruptions and large scale irregularities, which was an issue of serious concern as future of the younger generation was at stake," he lamented.
