No word from govt, says stampede victim's father

Bengaluru, June 10 (UNI) “Our children died before our eyes. Is that not enough to at least deserve a visit or a word of comfort?” These searing words from BT Lakshman, the father of a child killed in the recent stampede, have laid bare the deep anguish and growing resentment among grieving families over what they allege is government apathy.
The father, speaking to the media, said no government representative, including the chief minister or his deputy, had visited or reached out to the family following the tragedy. “Someone from the Revenue Department called and asked if I was home, saying the DCM might visit. I replied I was going to Bengaluru the next day and would speak after that. Since then, no one has called, come, or said anything,” he said.
“No one met me. No one spoke to me. If you ask what this means, it means the government is being negligent,” he said, holding back emotions.
While the administration has made official statements and announced compensation, the father said no personal contact or condolence had been offered. “Not even a word of sympathy has come from their side. You, the media, are the only ones who have come. I tried to avoid you too, but you still reached out. From the government, no one came.”
The father, who stressed that his family has no political affiliations, said they were among the voters who helped bring the current government to power. “We voted for them. We made them win. But now, they don’t even see us. Are we not citizens?”
He added that during the child’s final moments at Victoria Hospital, the grieving families were ignored. “Ministers were walking around like we didn’t exist. They were there—but they didn’t even look at us. If this is how they treat us during such a tragedy, where else do they see people like us?”
When asked about the compensation, the father said he would not keep the money for personal use. “If compensation comes, I will donate it in my son’s memory. Something good must come out of this loss. Just handing over money does not make up for a child’s life.”
