Northeast faces 26pc rainfall deficit in Southwest monsoon

Agartala, Oct 3 (UNI) The eight states of the Northeast this year experienced a 26pc rainfall deficit during the Southwest monsoon from June to September.
A senior official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that the formal declaration marking the end of the monsoon season in the region has not yet been made.
In the previous year, the monsoon officially retreated from the Northeast on October 14.
The IMD requires five consecutive rainless days, the presence of an anticyclone in the lower troposphere, and diminished moisture levels before announcing the conclusion of the monsoon, which still has not transpired, according to the official.
This season, Mizoram and Tripura recorded rainfall deficits of 19pc and 16pc, respectively, while Sikkim and Nagaland fared slightly better with 9pc and 6pc more rainfall than usual.
However, Meghalaya faced a significant shortfall of 60pc, followed by Manipur with a 46pc deficit, Arunachal Pradesh at 44pc, and Assam at 28pc.
Typically known for heavy rainfall, Meghalaya saw only 1,077.1 mm of rain instead of the expected 2,695.3 mm. Nationwide, the 2026 monsoon season delivered just 87pc of the Long Period Average, totalling 759.4 mm, marking the fourth-lowest rainfall since 2001.
In terms of regional performance, Northwest India received 94.1pc, Central India 97pc, South Peninsular India 76pc, and Northeast India 74pc of its typical rainfall. East and Northeast India recorded 1,017.1 mm, the lowest figure since records began in 1901.
Adequate monsoon rainfall is crucial for the Kharif season, and agriculture in Manipur is particularly vulnerable due to a 46pc deficit, compounded by ongoing ethnic conflicts that limit access to adequate irrigation, as indicated by agricultural scientists.
The monsoon made its presence felt in the Northeast on June 7, fully enveloping the region by June 10, amidst concerns about the potential impact of El Niño on rainfall forecasts. UNI BB SAS
