Nurpur Police arrest drug kingpin from Amritsar in 32.57-gm heroin seizure case

Dharamshala, Nov 5 (UNI) Nurpur police have arrested an alleged drug kingpin from Amritsar in Punjab in connection with the seizure of 32.57 grams of heroin (chitta), taking their investigation into the interstate drug trafficking network a step further.
Additional Superintendent of Police, Nurpur district, D.P. Verma told UNI on Thursday that the accused, identified as Sumit Kumar, son of Darshan Kumar and a resident of Amritsar, was arrested on November 4 following sustained investigation and interrogation of two persons arrested earlier in the case.
He said that the case dates back to October 14, when a CIA team of Nurpur police, acting on a tip-off, intercepted two youths near Nagni Mata Temple bus stop at Kandwal. During a search, police recovered 32.57 grams of heroin from a jeans pocket kept in a backpack belonging to Rakesh Thakur (36), a resident of Dharamshala. His associate, Vikas (24), a resident of Barol village in Dharamshala, was also arrested.
ASP Verma said that a case (FIR No. 260/2026) was registered at Nurpur police station on October 15 under Sections 21 and 29 of the NDPS Act.
He said the latest arrest was part of efforts to trace the backward and forward linkages of the drug supply chain, identify the original source of the contraband and establish the role of other suppliers and distributors involved in the interstate network.
Further investigation is underway to identify other persons involved in the illegal trade.
Nurpur police have appealed to the public to share information about drug trafficking and cooperate with the ongoing anti-chitta campaign. UNI AR AAB
