Odisha bandh rejected by people, BJP condemns alleged violence: Anil Biswal

Bhubaneswar, Oct 8 (UNI) The Odisha bandh called by the Congress and Left parties on Thursday failed to receive public support, with normal life remaining largely unaffected across the state, BJP state spokesperson Anil Biswal claimed.
In a statement, Biswal said the response to the bandh showed that people had not endorsed the issues raised by the opposition parties.
He, however, condemned the alleged violent behaviour of Congress and Left workers at some places, claiming that their actions created fear and inconvenience among the public.
Biswal alleged that videos circulated in the media showed Congress workers stopping and allegedly misbehaving with people travelling to hospitals and parents taking their children to schools.
He further alleged that even pregnant women were not spared from what he described as the “anarchic behaviour” of Congress and INDIA bloc workers.
“The peaceful people of Odisha will give an appropriate response to such behaviour,” Biswal said.
Questioning the Congress's slogan of “saving the Constitution”, he asked the party to clarify under which provision of the Constitution such alleged acts of violence were permissible.
Referring to the Supreme Court judgment in the Communist Party of India (M) vs Bharat Kumar case, Biswal said the court had held that political parties could not forcibly enforce a bandh.
“If the opposition parties had respect for the Constitution, they would not have violated the Supreme Court judgment today,” he said.
Biswal said the videos of the alleged incidents would remain as evidence of what he described as the opposition parties' conduct during the bandh.
Taking a dig at the Left parties, he said parties that secured only 0.14 per cent of the votes in Odisha were now alleging that their votes had been stolen.
He also criticised the Congress for attributing its electoral setbacks to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, claiming that the party had been rejected by the people of Odisha and had witnessed a decline in its vote share in successive elections since 1995.
