Odisha: Bargarh Dhanujatra’s 79-year history captured in new documentary

Bhubaneswar, Oct 4 (UNI) A new 52-minute documentary chronicling the 79-year history, traditions and performances of Bargarh Dhanujatra was screened in Bhubaneswar, documenting the festival’s evolution as a major open-air theatrical tradition.
Titled ‘Mamu Gharaku Jatra’ (A Trip to Uncle’s Home), the documentary captures the festival’s enactment of the mythological story of Lord Krishna and King Kansa. It was produced by OdishaLIVE with support from Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL).
Bargarh MP Pradip Purohit, who attended the screening as chief guest on Saturday, said the documentary would provide a lasting record of the festival’s history and traditions for
researchers, historians and filmmakers.
The event also featured the unveiling of the documentary poster and the felicitation of artists and members of the production team.
Bhubaneswar Pradhan, who played Kansa in several editions of Dhanujatra, was specially honoured. Directed by Suresh Patnaik, with Pranati Parida as co-producer, the documentary is now available on the OdishaLIVE YouTube channel.
