Odisha: BJD slams govt over childbirth by Class X student in hostel

Bhubaneswar, Nov 6 (UNI) The Opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Friday accused the BJP government of gross negligence in safeguarding tribal girl students in residential schools after a Class X student staying at a Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya in Mayurbhanj district delivered a baby.
Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, BJD Tribal Cell president and former minister Sudam Marandi and former Deputy Speaker Saluga Pradhan alleged that the incident exposed serious lapses in hostel management and monitoring.
Questioning how hostel authorities remained unaware of the student's pregnancy, Marandi said the suspension of the headmaster was inadequate and demanded the dismissal of all officials found responsible. He also sought an impartial investigation to fix accountability.
Alleging that incidents of sexual exploitation and pregnancies involving tribal girl students in residential institutions pointed to a failure of the administration, Marandi called for stringent action against those responsible and stronger safeguards for students.
He urged Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to intervene personally and ensure accountability.
Pradhan, meanwhile, accused the government and school authorities of failing to protect tribal girls in residential institutions. He called for improved infrastructure, stricter monitoring and stronger security arrangements in all tribal residential schools and hostels to prevent a recurrence.
The BJD leaders expressed concern over the incident, noting that both the Chief Minister and the School and Mass Education Minister belong to the tribal community.
