Odisha Congress seeks immediate arrest of accused in alleged Nayapalli rape case

Bhubaneswar, Oct 2 (UNI) The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) on Friday demanded the immediate arrest of the accused in the alleged rape of a young woman at Nayapalli here and sought stringent action against those responsible for the crime.
Expressing serious concern over the incident, OPCC president Bhakta Charan Das said the alleged sexual assault of a young woman at gunpoint in her rented apartment in Nayapalli was a matter of grave concern and had caused anxiety among residents of the state capital.
On his direction, a delegation of the Bhubaneswar District Congress Committee, led by its president Prakash Chandra Jena, met the Officer-in-Charge of Nayapalli police station and demanded a speedy investigation, immediate arrest of the accused and strict legal action against those found guilty.
The delegation also urged the police to intensify patrolling across Bhubaneswar and take effective measures to ensure the safety and security of residents and prevent recurrence of such incidents.
Senior Congress leader and former minister Suresh Kumar Routray, party spokesperson Rajani Mahanty and Manoranjan Das were among those present during the meeting.
Police sources said a 26-year-old software engineer was allegedly sexually assaulted at gunpoint by a masked unidentified man at her rented apartment in Behera Sahi under Nayapalli police limits on the night of September 30.
The woman was staying in the apartment with her elder sister, who was away at the time of the incident. According to the complaint, the accused knocked on the door and the woman opened it believing that her sister had returned. The accused allegedly barged into the apartment, threatened her at gunpoint and sexually assaulted her before fleeing the scene.
Senior police officers, including Bhubaneswar DCP Saravana Vivek M, visited the spot and reviewed the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police have formed four special teams to identify and apprehend the accused. The teams are examining CCTV footage from the locality, tracing possible escape routes, collecting forensic evidence and conducting searches and raids at suspected locations, sources said.
Meanwhile, the Odisha State Commission for Women (OSCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and registered a case. A team from the Commission visited the Nayapalli police station and met the victim.
The Commission has sought a detailed report from the Bhubaneswar DCP within 15 days on the investigation and action taken in the case.
