Odisha Governor calls for affordable, accessible advanced surgical care in rural areas

Bhubaneswar, Oct 2 (UNI) Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati on Friday called for making advanced surgical care affordable and accessible to patients in rural and underserved areas, saying the true measure of medical excellence lay not merely in technological advancement but in ensuring that its benefits reached all sections of society.
Addressing the 36th Annual Conference of the Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterology (IASGCON 2026) here, Kambhampati said rapid technological advances were significantly expanding treatment possibilities in surgical gastroenterology, making it essential to bridge the gap between advanced medical facilities and patients living beyond major urban centres.
He described surgical gastroenterology as a specialty that brings together advanced science, sophisticated technology and compassionate patient care, covering complex diseases involving the oesophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, biliary tract and rectum.
The complexity of these conditions, he said, demanded high levels of technical expertise, sound clinical judgement and multidisciplinary planning to ensure better patient outcomes.
The Governor noted that surgical gastroenterology had evolved considerably from extensive open procedures to laparoscopic, endoscopic, robotic and other minimally invasive techniques.
Modern surgery, he said, was no longer confined to treating disease but increasingly focused on precision, preservation of organ function, reduction of complications, faster recovery and improved quality of life for patients.
He said advances in imaging, molecular diagnostics, precision oncology and perioperative care were further transforming the treatment of complex diseases. Such developments, he added, had made collaboration among different medical disciplines increasingly important, particularly in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, transplantation and gastrointestinal oncology.
Kambhampati also highlighted the growing role of Artificial Intelligence, three-dimensional imaging, image-guided procedures, robotic systems and surgical simulation in improving surgical planning, precision, training and patient safety.
At the same time, he cautioned that technology could assist surgeons but could never replace professional judgement, ethics, responsibility and compassion.
The Governor said one of the key challenges before the healthcare sector was to ensure that the benefits of advanced medical technologies reached patients in rural and underserved areas.
He emphasised the need for India-specific research and cost-effective healthcare models that could address the country's diverse healthcare requirements while making advanced surgical treatment more widely available.
The conference brought together surgeons, medical professionals, researchers and young practitioners from across the country to exchange knowledge, experiences and emerging developments in the field.
Kambhampati urged young surgeons to combine technical competence with scientific curiosity, critical thinking and ethical responsibility.
He also called for greater institutional collaboration and multicentric research, stressing the importance of translating scientific findings into routine clinical practice for the benefit of patients.
