Odisha Governor calls for climate-conscious growth, wider adoption of clean technologies

Bhubaneswar, Oct 2 (UNI) Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati on Friday called for wider adoption of clean technologies to curb pollution, conserve energy and water, reduce waste and protect natural resources, asserting that economic growth and environmental protection must move together.
Addressing the third edition of the Earth Again Conclave 2026, organised by the Sambad Group here, Kambhampati said climate change was no longer a distant threat, with rising temperatures, erratic rainfall and extreme weather events already affecting agriculture, water resources, health and livelihoods.
Speaking on the theme “Gen C – Generation Climate,” the Governor urged the younger generation to become ambassadors of climate action and make sustainable practices part of their everyday lives.
“Climate action is not the responsibility of one institution or one section of society. It is a shared responsibility,” he said, calling for coordinated efforts by governments, educational institutions, industries, the media and citizens to address the growing environmental challenges.
The Governor said industries remained crucial for employment, livelihoods and economic growth, but development must be pursued with greater environmental responsibility.
He urged young people to embrace electric vehicles and cleaner modes of mobility, citing the 635-kW solar power station at Lok Bhavan and the shift of the Governor’s convoy to electric vehicles as examples of green initiatives.
Kambhampati also advocated installation of solar power systems on university campuses and suggested that students and staff should be allowed to charge their electric vehicles free of cost for at least one year. He further encouraged universities and institutions to explore the RESCO model for implementing renewable-energy projects.
Calling for greater institutional commitment to sustainability, the Governor urged universities across Odisha to obtain green certification and appealed to youngsters to plant trees throughout the year under the principle of “Each One, Plant One.”
He cited Lok Bhavan’s IGBC green certification, expansion of green cover, dedicated enclosures for animals and birds and water-harvesting pits as examples of measures aimed at promoting environmental sustainability.
The Governor also underlined the economic benefits of climate-conscious practices, saying greater use of solar energy, electric mobility, water conservation and waste reduction could strengthen energy security by reducing dependence on imported crude oil and helping conserve foreign exchange.
The Earth Again initiative of the Sambad Group focuses on community-led climate action, youth engagement and environmental awareness across Odisha. The 2026 edition is centred on “Gen C”, seeking to engage young people as active participants in climate action.
During the conclave, Sunita Narain, Director General of the Centre for Science and Environment, was felicitated.
