Odisha launches ‘Sujal’ campaign to promote water conservation, safe drinking water

Bhubaneswar, Oct 2 (UNI) The Odisha Government on Friday launched the ‘Sujal’ campaign across the state to create awareness about water conservation, safe drinking water practices and prevention of water-borne diseases.
Housing and Urban Development Minister Krishna Chandra Mahapatra inaugurated the campaign in Bhubaneswar. Organised by the Water Corporation of Odisha (WATCO) under the Housing and Urban Development Department, the state-wide campaign will continue from October 2 to 16.
The campaign seeks to encourage judicious use of water, prevent wastage, protect available water resources and ensure water security for future generations.
Carrying the message, “Water conservation—today’s necessity, the future generation’s destiny,” the campaign will sensitise citizens to the importance of conserving water and adopting responsible water-use practices in their daily lives.
It will also highlight the close link between safe drinking water and public health, with emphasis on preventing diseases caused by contaminated water. People will be sensitised about the risks of diarrhoea, dysentery, typhoid and jaundice resulting from the consumption or use of unsafe water.
The campaign will stress the importance of storing drinking water in clean and covered containers, keeping water sources free from pollution and maintaining proper hygiene at the household level.
Citizens will be encouraged to adopt simple measures to conserve water, including keeping taps closed when water is not required, repairing leaks in water supply pipelines immediately and refraining from dumping waste near water sources such as rivers, ponds and tube wells.
The campaign will further promote rainwater harvesting and its reuse, regular cleaning of household overhead and underground water storage tanks, and maintenance of drinking water quality.
The government said these measures would help minimise water wastage, prevent contamination and contribute to ensuring safe and sustainable water availability.
The Odisha Government appealed to citizens to actively participate in the ‘Sujal’ campaign and make water conservation and safe water practices an integral part of their daily lives.
