Odisha sets 72-hour deadline to complete pending flood compensation

Bhubaneswar, Oct 15 (UNI) Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari on Thursday directed officials to ensure that all pending compensation payments to flood-affected people in the state are disbursed within the next 72 hours.
The direction came during a review meeting chaired by Pujari to assess the final extent of flood damage in the state this year and the progress of compensation disbursement and restoration work in affected areas.
The minister interacted with senior departmental officials and district Collectors to take stock of relief and rehabilitation measures and the delivery of financial assistance to affected families.
Pujari said Odisha had experienced 12 low-pressure systems this year, six of which intensified into depressions, causing extensive damage across around 28 districts. Baleshwar, Bhadrak and Jajpur were among the worst-affected districts, while almost all districts suffered damage to varying degrees.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had announced a compensation package of Rs 1,000 crore for flood-affected areas, the minister said. Assistance has been provided for damage to agricultural land and crops, houses, household utensils, boats, fishing nets and other losses, he added.
The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has released Rs 288.72 crore towards relief camp management, house repairs, agricultural assistance and other compensation measures.
Although October 10 was fixed as the deadline for reaching affected people with compensation, officials informed the meeting that the distribution process had been completed in almost all districts.
Pujari directed the officials to expedite the remaining payments and ensure that all eligible beneficiaries receive their compensation within 72 hours.
The minister also stressed the need for comprehensive measures to minimise the impact of prolonged heavy rainfall and mitigate urban flooding in the future.
District Collectors and senior district-level officials from across the state joined the review meeting virtually.
