Odisha: ‘Tapoi’ captivates audience with a poignant tale of sisterly suffering

Bhubaneswar, Sept 15 (UNI) The poignant tale of ‘Tapoi’, marked by betrayal, cruelty and the enduring bond between a sister and her brothers, came alive on stage as the Ladies Club of Landmark Phase II Apartment Complex on Sundarpada-Jatni Road here staged a dance drama on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi.
The performance drew hundreds of residents, many of whom were visibly moved by the emotional portrayal of Tapoi and an old woman, whose characters emerged as the highlights of the presentation.
Senior resident Banita Patnaik said the performance was an effort to keep traditional Odia tales alive at a time when such stories are increasingly disappearing from family conversations, particularly with the rise of nuclear families. “Stories like Tapoi are becoming rare to hear in modern times. This is an attempt to introduce and preserve our traditional Odia tales among the members of our housing society,” she said.
The tale of Tapoi, deeply embedded in Odisha’s cultural memory, revolves around the sister of seven merchant brothers. After returning from a maritime trading voyage, the brothers discover that their younger sister had been subjected to cruelty by their wives, except the youngest, popularly known as ‘Sana Bhauja’.
The play was written and directed by Subrata Mishra, with Jyoti Das handling co-direction and make-up. Banaprabha Sethi played Tapoi, while Anindita Sarkar portrayed the old Brahmin woman. Rashmi Mishra, Mamata Mohapatra and Sagarika Acharya played the Sadhaba brothers, while Bijaylaxmi Panigrahi, Sheetal Tiwari and Rubika Satapathy portrayed the Sadhaba wives. Tiwari also effectively played the ‘Sakhi’ character.
The performance also resonated with the cultural traditions of Sundarpada, an area known for the Khudurukuni Osha, in which unmarried girls worship the goddess on five consecutive Sundays, praying for the safety and well-being of their brothers. UNI MK CDS
