OJU demands probe into alleged retaliatory attack on journalist

Bhubaneswar, Oct 4 (UNI) The Odisha Journalists’ union (OJU) has demanded a high-level probe into the alleged assault on journalist Kshirod Chandra Das in Mayurbhanj, saying he was attacked in retaliation for his news reports.
Das, an OJU member and correspondent of a local vernacular daily in Sarasakana block, was allegedly attacked at Jamsola on September 27.

He sustained serious head injuries and later lodged a complaint at Jharpokharia police station, following which a case was registered, the union said.
In a representation to the Director General of Police (DGP), Odisha, the OJU claimed that the accused had criminal antecedents and demanded strict action against all those involved.
The union alleged that attacks and threats against working journalists by mafia groups had increased in the state in recent years. It further alleged that some local police personnel had links with such groups and provided them protection.
The OJU has constituted a three-member fact-finding team comprising Deepak Kumar Nayak, Abhijit Mohanty and Sarada Prasad Barik to independently examine the circumstances leading to the attack.
The union urged the DGP and other concerned officials to extend full cooperation to the team and sought an impartial investigation and exemplary action against those found responsible.
