Old RTR flyover reopens for light vehicles after repairs: Parvesh Verma

New Delhi, Oct 26 (UNI) The Old Rao Tula Ram (RTR) flyover, a key link between South Delhi and the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, reopened for light vehicles today evening following the completion of repair work, Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Verma said today.
The minister, who inspected the flyover along with senior Public Works Department (PWD) officials, said a comprehensive structural audit was underway to assess the condition of the 17-year-old structure and ensure its long-term safety.
“The necessary repair work has been completed, and the flyover is reopened for light vehicles this evening. A comprehensive structural audit is also underway to ensure the strength and long-term safety of this flyover, which was constructed in 2009,” Verma said.
The carriageway towards the IGI Airport from Vasant Vihar was closed on October 20 after the Delhi Traffic Police detected cracks in the road surface at two locations. A subsequent inspection revealed deterioration in the concrete of the gap slab section, visible cracks and exposed reinforcement bars.
Traffic was stopped on the stretch as a precautionary measure to prevent any risk to commuters, while vehicles were diverted to the adjoining service road.
The closure led to congestion and long queues near the flyover, particularly during peak hours, inconveniencing daily commuters, airport-bound passengers, taxi operators and residents of nearby localities.
The reopening is expected to ease traffic movement along the busy corridor, which connects several parts of South Delhi with the airport.
However, the flyover will initially be accessible only to light vehicles, with further decisions on its use to be guided by the findings of the ongoing structural audit. The assessment is intended to determine the overall condition of the structure and identify any additional strengthening or maintenance work that may be required.
Verma said the closure was necessary in the interest of public safety and that the department had acted promptly to complete the repairs and restore connectivity.
The PWD will continue to monitor the flyover, while commuters have been advised to follow traffic advisories, adhere to the restrictions and cooperate with traffic personnel deployed in the area.
Further decisions regarding the flyover will be taken after the structural audit findings are assessed.
