Omar Abdullah approves hike in stipend for MBBS, BDS interns to Rs 25,000

Srinagar, Oct 20 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has approved an increase in the monthly stipend of MBBS and BDS interns from Rs 12,300 to Rs 25,000, government sources said.
The Health and Medical Education Department is likely to issue a formal order on Wednesday.
The development comes amid renewed protests by medical interns across Jammu and Kashmir, who resumed their agitation on Tuesday, accusing the government of failing to honour its written assurance to enhance their stipend within 30 days.
The interns had staged protests last month, demanding an increase in their monthly stipend from Rs 12,300 to Rs 30,000. They called off their agitation on September 9 after the government assured them that their demand would be addressed within a month.
However, alleging that the assurance had not been fulfilled, the interns staged protests expressing disappointment over what they described as a breach of trust by the Health and Medical Education Department.
“We trusted the written assurance issued by the J&K Health Minister and believed it would carry weight. We respected the minister and the officials, but we are back to square one, with the stipend remaining at Rs 12,300,” a protesting intern said.
The students said a delegation that met officials on Monday, including the officer who had signed the written assurance and the Director General of Finance, was asked to wait for another two days.
Questioning the repeated extensions, the interns said they had already waited for the 30-day period promised by the government and could not afford further delays.
They also expressed concern over the upcoming Darbar Move, under which government offices will shift from Srinagar to Jammu, saying the relocation could make it more difficult for students from medical colleges across the union Territory to pursue their demands with the concerned authorities.
The prolonged uncertainty has left the medical interns disappointed, with the protesting students alleging that their workload and responsibilities in hospitals were not being adequately reflected in their existing stipend.
The interns have maintained that the existing monthly stipend of Rs 12,300 is inadequate in view of their workload and responsibilities in hospitals, and have been seeking an increase to Rs 30,000.
