Omar Abdullah says INDIA bloc campaign against EC will continue

Srinagar, Oct 6 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said the opposition INDIA bloc would continue its campaign against the Election Commission over alleged deletions from electoral rolls.
Omar said leaders of the INDIA bloc had finalised a calendar of programmes for October, under which MPs of the opposition alliance were scheduled to march to the Election Commission on Tuesday.
The march was organised to raise concerns over the ongoing controversy surrounding the revision of electoral rolls and the alleged deletion of voters’ names.
“Few days ago, there was a meeting of the leaders of the INDIA bloc in Delhi. A calendar was set for this month. Under the calendar, the Members of Parliament of the INDIA bloc had to hold a protest at the Election Commission. This process will continue, as the media has proved. We have repeatedly said this, but few people paid attention to it. Now the media has also started saying it,” Omar told reporters in Srinagar.
Referring to the legal proceedings concerning the revision of voter lists, Omar said the Supreme Court was also raising questions.
“The Supreme Court is also raising questions. The Supreme Court has also sought an answer from the Election Commission and the Government of India on voter deletion. We will wait for the court’s decision,” the Chief Minister said.
The Supreme Court on Monday sought responses from the Election Commission and its officials on petitions challenging aspects of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise and changes relating to voter registration.
Asked about 150 Bangladeshi nationals allegedly living illegally in Jammu and Kashmir who were airlifted for deportation, Omar said their presence had not caused any problems but acknowledged that they could not stay in the country illegally.
“We did not face any problem with their staying here. But it is also true that they cannot stay here illegally,” he said.
On the Rohingyas, however, the Chief Minister questioned the recent action against them.
“But the Rohingyas, who are being targeted for no reason, when they were driven out of their country, we gave them a place here. We allowed them to stay here until their country’s situation improves. I find it strange to take action against them all of a sudden,” Abdullah said.
Omar distanced his administration from the enforcement action against Bangladeshi nationals, saying matters concerning foreign nationals and the police were under the control of the union Government.
“But we do not have it in our hands. It is the Government of India. And the Government of India is taking the help of the police,” he said. “The police is also not in our control. So, it is better to ask this question to the people who are under the police command.”
Omar Abdullah also said his government would not implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Jammu and Kashmir, arguing that a law intended to be uniform should be debated and enacted by Parliament rather than introduced selectively by individual states.
“I have said that the Uniform Civil Code does not exist until it is applicable everywhere. We will not apply the Uniform Civil Code here,” Omar said.
His remarks came amid the BJP’s push for the UCC through states ruled by the party.
“In Bihar, Nitish Kumar's party has said that they will not apply the UCC. There are other governments who have said that they will not apply the Uniform Civil Code. Only the BJP is applying the Uniform Civil Code,” he said.
“This is not something that should be done state by state. If you have the courage, bring a law in Parliament. Debate it in Parliament. See if it gets passed in Parliament or not,” Omar said.
He alleged that the BJP was pursuing the UCC through state legislatures because it did not have the numbers in Parliament to pass such legislation.
“They will not bring a law in Parliament because they do not have the number to pass it in Parliament. That is why, one by one, the BJP is doing it in their states. Which is wrong,” the J&K Chief Minister said.
“If you look at democracy in the right way, then it should not be in different states. It should be debated in Parliament. If it is brought in Parliament, then this bill will not get passed,” he said.
