Orange alert in four Kerala districts today; heavy rain likely

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 26 (UNI) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert in four districts of Kerala on Monday, warning of the possibility of very heavy rainfall at isolated places.
Yellow alerts have also been issued in eight districts, with adverse weather conditions expected to continue in parts of the state on Tuesday.
Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad and Malappuram districts are under orange alert on October 26. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts are under yellow alert.
For October 27, the IMD has issued a yellow alert in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad and Malappuram districts, forecasting heavy rainfall at isolated places.
The authorities have urged people in landslide-prone and flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and move to safer locations whenever necessary. Those living in hilly regions vulnerable to landslides, mudslides and flash floods should take precautionary measures, while residents of low-lying areas prone to waterlogging should assess the situation and relocate to relief camps if required.
People living in houses with weak structures or unsecured roofs have been advised to exercise caution in view of the possibility of strong winds. Dangerous trees, electric posts, hoardings and walls on public and private premises should be secured, and potential hazards brought to the attention of the authorities.
The public has been warned against crossing rivers or entering rivers and other water bodies for bathing, fishing or other activities. Tourist visits to waterfalls, water bodies and hilly areas should be avoided until the rain warnings are withdrawn. People should also refrain from standing on bridges over water bodies to watch the scenery, take selfies or gather in groups.
Motorists and pedestrians have been advised to exercise caution on roads adjoining water bodies and on stretches undergoing repair work. Coastal residents should remain alert to the possibility of stronger sea incursions and ensure that fishing equipment is kept secure.
Residents in disaster-prone areas have been asked to keep emergency kits ready and avoid night travel to hilly regions. The public should also be alert to accidents caused by trees being uprooted and electric poles collapsing in strong winds.
With the possibility of broken power lines, people should ensure that waterlogged lanes and footpaths are free from electrical hazards before entering them. Early-morning commuters and students have been specifically cautioned to remain vigilant. Electrical hazards can be reported to the Kerala State Electricity Board through its emergency helpline, 1912.
For emergencies, the public can contact district control rooms through the toll-free numbers 1077 and 1070.
Meanwhile, the IMD has prohibited fishing activities along the Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts until October 26. Strong winds reaching speeds of 35–45 kmph and occasionally 55 kmph, accompanied by rough weather, are likely along the Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar and the Kanyakumari coast.
