Oscar-winning actress Eva Marie Saint dies at 102

Washington, Oct 7 (UNI) Eva Marie Saint, the Oscar-winning actress celebrated for her unforgettable performances in Hollywood classics including On the Waterfront and North by Northwest, has passed away at the age of 102.
Saint died on Tuesday, October 6, of natural causes at her home in Los Angeles, surrounded by family and loved ones, according to a press release reported by People.
Saint is survived by her husband of more than six decades, television director Jeffrey Hayden, their children Darrell and Laurette, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Her death marks the passing of one of Hollywood’s most enduring performers, whose remarkable career spanned film, television, radio and Broadway and whose performances in two cinematic classics secured her place in Hollywood history.
According to Variety, the delicate, fine-boned actress, one of the first breakout talents from early television, won her Academy Award as best supporting actress for “On the Waterfront” in 1955, making her the oldest living Oscar winner.
Born on July 4, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey, Saint studied at Ohio’s Bowling Green State University before bursting into show business by way of television, People magazine reported.
In her first role, she appeared as a spokeswoman on the game show ‘Campus Hoopla’ in 1946. For almost a decade after her debute, she worked steadily in television and radio and made a pit stop on Broadway in 1953’s ‘The Trip to Bountiful’.
As per the publication, Saint made her debut in the year 1954 with Elia Kazan’s ‘On the Waterfront’ movie. She became a household name for her magnetic portrayal of Edie Doyle in the film that won her Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Meanwhile, two days away from giving birth to her first child, the actress jokingly said, “I may have the baby right her!”
After her Oscar win in the years, Saint notched a bevy of renowned films, including “That Certain Feeling”, “A Hatful of Rain”, “Raintree County”, “Exodus”, “All Fall Down” and “36 Hours”.
Most notably, she remembered her top-notch performance in the 1959 blockbuster movie Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic thriller “North by Northwest”, which was a career-defining depiction of Eve Kendall.
Saint also starred opposite many of the cinema’s most legendary leading men, including Marlon Brando, Paul Newman, Warren Beatty, James Garner and, most importantly, Cary Grant.
The veteran actress had a long career on television and continued working across different formats over the years.
Notably, Eva Marie Saint married Jeffrey Hayden in 1951 after they met on the subway. Hayden directed numerous popular television shows including “Leave It to Beaver” and “The Incredible Hulk”. The couple also appeared in a San Francisco production of the A.R. Gurney play “Love Letters” in 2011.
