Over 6.32 lakh adults appear for ULLAS literacy assessment in Telangana

Hyderabad, Sep 27 (UNI) More than 6.32 lakh adults across Telangana appeared for the ULLAS (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society) Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Test on Sunday as part of the ‘Ammaku Aksharamala’ programme.
According to SERP officials, around 5.32 lakh women from rural areas and nearly one lakh people from urban areas took the examination. The test was conducted across 124 Urban Local Bodies and areas under GHMC, MMC and CMC jurisdictions, in coordination with the Adult Education Department. As many as 98,324 Self-Help Group members and 720 street vendors also appeared for the test.
Minister for Panchayat Raj, Rural Development and Women & Child Welfare Danasari Anasuya Seethakka congratulated the adult learners and said literacy was not merely about reading and writing but about building confidence and enabling women to independently manage their daily affairs.
Seethakka said many women had discontinued their education due to early marriage, family responsibilities, financial difficulties and employment-related challenges. The government was providing them an opportunity to resume education free of cost within their villages through ‘Ammaku Aksharamala’ and the Indira Mahila Shakti programme.
She said 13 lakh adult learners had received training at literacy centres during a 100-day period under ULLAS this year. Special ‘Akshara Vikasam’ books were provided to teach Telugu reading and writing, basic arithmetic and other skills needed for everyday life.
In the March assessment, 6.29 lakh people appeared for the examination and around 5.21 lakh passed, receiving literacy certificates from the National Institute of Open Schooling.
Seethakka said those completing the ULLAS programme could pursue further education, including the Class 10 examination through the Telangana Open School Society (TOSS). Learners can also opt for vocational courses such as tailoring, computer operations, electrical work and beautician training.
She urged women to make use of the open-school opportunities and said the literacy movement would continue until the goal of universal adult literacy was achieved, according to an official statement.
