Pakistan women survive Thailand scare to reach Asian Games semis

New Delhi, Sep 17 (UNI) Pakistan stared at an Asian Games upset before captain Fatima Sana launched a late rescue act, narrowly powering her side past Thailand by three wickets in a tense, rain-shortened quarterfinal at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin on Thursday.
Chasing 92 from 11 overs, Pakistan were in deep trouble at 48/4 and needed 44 runs from the final four overs. Sana changed the momentum with a blistering 21 off just nine balls, helping Pakistan recover before Tuba Hassan finished the job with two balls to spare.
Pakistan had opted to field after a wet outfield reduced the contest to 11 overs per side. Sana also made an early impact with the ball, claiming two wickets as Thailand struggled to score freely.
Nannapat Koncharoenkai provided the innings with much-needed momentum, hitting 49 before being trapped lbw by Sana in the final over. Captain Naruemol Chaiwai added a six and a four in a brief cameo as Thailand posted 91.
Pakistan started strongly, with Shawaal Zulfiqar smashing three fours and a six during the opening three overs. Her dismissal, however, sparked a collapse, with off-spinner Onnicha Kamchomphu claiming three wickets.
With the required rate rising, Sana attacked Kamchomphu with three fours and a six, while Eyman Fatima added another six in a 25-run over. Both fell late, leaving Pakistan under pressure again, but Tuba Hassan's six and four settled the contest and sealed Pakistan's semifinal berth.
Brief Scores: Thailand Women 91/4 in 11 overs (Nannapat Koncharoenkai 49, Phannita Maya 15, Naruemol Chaiwai 10; Fatima Sana 2/22) lost to Pakistan Women 92/7 in 10.4 overs (Shawaal Zulfiqar 25, Fatima Sana 21; Onnicha Kamchomphu 3/37, Sunida Chaturongrattana 2/23) by 3 wickets.
Earlier in the day, the first quarterfinal between Bangladesh and Hong Kong produced no result due to a wet outfield at the Korogi Sports Park. Despite the washout, Bangladesh qualified for the semifinals by virtue of a higher seeding.UNI TB AAB
