People sent us a message: Cong to review MLC rout, says CM

Bengaluru, Oct 28 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Wednesday said the Congress would undertake a detailed review of its performance in the Legislative Council elections and initiate corrective measures after the BJP-JD(S) alliance swept all four seats, admitting that the results had fallen short of the ruling party's expectations.
The Congress had expected to win at least one or two seats but failed to secure any, Shivakumar acknowledged, promising to examine the reasons behind the setback and address the shortcomings.
“The people have given us a message. We will examine that message very carefully and work on correcting whatever went wrong,” he said, asserting that the party respected the electorate's mandate.
The NDA's clean sweep across two Graduates' and two Teachers' constituencies, spanning 19 districts, has put the Congress leadership under pressure to assess its electoral strategy and organisational performance in the affected regions.
The BJP won three seats, while its alliance partner JD(S) secured the Bengaluru Teachers' constituency.
In Bengaluru Teachers, JD(S) candidate AP Ranganath defeated Congress veteran Puttanna, a five-time MLC. In the North-East Teachers' constituency, BJP candidate Shashil G Namoshi won for the fifth consecutive time, defeating Congress candidate Sharanappa Mattur by 3,297 votes.
BJP candidates S V Sankanur and KM Suresh won the two Graduates' constituencies. Sankanur retained the West Graduates' seat for a third consecutive term, defeating Congress candidate Mohan Limbikai.
Responding to the opposition's attempt to project the results as an indication of the political mood ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections, Shivakumar questioned whether the same yardstick had been applied to the Congress's performance in the Channapatna and Shiggaon Assembly by-elections.
“If they are calling this a precursor to the next elections, does that mean the by-elections in Channapatna and Shiggaon were also indicators? The opposition should speak about those results as well,” he said.
Shivakumar's admission that the Congress had expected to win seats, coupled with his assurance of corrective measures, puts the focus on the party's assessment of the reasons behind the defeat.
While the NDA has sought to portray the sweep as a reflection of its political support, the Council results alone do not establish the likely outcome of the 2028 Assembly elections.
