PETA India moves SC seeking return of elephant Madhuri to Vantara

Kolhapur, Oct 1 (UNI) People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India has approached the Supreme Court seeking its intervention for the relocation of elephant "Madhuri" from Nandani Math in Kolhapur to Vantara, alleging that the temple premises are unsuitable for her long-term welfare.
PETA India, in its petition, has urged the apex court to direct that Madhuri be shifted back to Vantara, where she had earlier been housed.
PETA (The animal rights organisation said it moved the Supreme Court less than 15 days after Madhuri returned to Nandani Math in Kolhapur on September 11-12.
According to PETA India, "Madhuri is subjected to loud firecrackers, screaming crowds, slogans and drums during her return to the temple. The organisation has further alleged that the elephant is currently living like a prisoner in jail as she is kept in shackles and in isolation."
“Nandani Math is not a suitable place for Madhuri, who was able to freely associate with other elephants in Vantara. She is now isolated in a shed. Experts have already concluded that the facility is not suitable for her long-term life and health,” PETA India Vice-President of Policy Khushboo Gupta said.
PETA India has also submitted before the Supreme Court that Madhuri’s return to Nandani Math is contrary to orders passed by the Bombay High Court on July 16, 2025, and the Supreme Court on July 28, 2025.
The organisation has sought immediate judicial intervention to ensure Madhuri’s relocation to Vantara, citing concerns over her welfare, living conditions and long-term health.
