Pinarayi Vijayan accorded warm reception on return from Delhi

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 11 (UNI) Kerala Opposition Leader and CPI(M) Politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan was accorded a warm reception by party workers on his arrival at the Thiruvananthapuram airport on Sunday following his detention during an opposition protest in New Delhi.
A large number of CPI(M) workers gathered at the airport to welcome Vijayan, who was taken into custody by Delhi Police on Saturday while participating in a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Vijayan, along with CPI(M) leaders and other opposition representatives, had participated in the demonstration at Jantar Mantar against alleged irregularities in the electoral process and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The protesters were detained by Delhi Police and later released after more than eight hours. CPI(M) leaders alleged that the police action was an attempt to suppress democratic protests.
The detention of Vijayan and other leaders had triggered political reactions in Kerala, with Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan directing the Chief Secretary to look into the circumstances surrounding the detention and intervene through the Resident Commissioner in Delhi.
