Pinarayi Vijayan condemns police protection for RSS event at Central University of Kerala

Kasaragod, Oct 6 (UNI) Opposition leader in Kerala Assembly and CPI(M) Politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday strongly condemned the Kerala Police providing protection for an RSS programme at the Central University of Kerala here, alleging that the UDF Government was facilitating the Sangh Parivar's attempts to saffronise higher educational institutions and push communal agendas on campuses.
Vijayan said the police action was "highly condemnable", particularly as almost all student organisations, except those affiliated with the Sangh Parivar, had protested against the programme.
Despite the opposition from student organisations, the government had extended its support to the conduct of the programme, he alleged, adding that the UDF Government's alleged cooperation with a Sangh Parivar conspiracy to saffronise higher educational institutions and implement communal agendas on campuses had become a routine affair.
He said the political intent behind the national seminar organised in connection with the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram was evident.
"If it is being claimed that this was an academic programme, what justification do the university authorities have for inviting an RSS leader who has no academic background?" Vijayan asked.
He also pointed out that even students who had registered in advance for the programme were allegedly prevented from entering the hall and were made to remain outside.
Vijayan said Kerala had always strongly resisted attempts to turn educational institutions into centres of hate propaganda and communalism.
However, the use of the state police to provide security for such forces to conduct their activities exposed what he described as the UDF Government's policy of appeasing the RSS, he alleged.
Providing police protection for the Sangh Parivar to operate freely in Kerala's higher education sector amounted to a challenge to the secular character of the State, Vijayan said.
He called for strong protests from the general public against attempts to provide a foothold for such "reactionary forces" in Kerala's higher education sector.
