PM Modi to celebrate Diwali with security personnel in Bastar, hails transformation of former naxal-hit region

New Delhi, Nov 8 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is heading to Bastar in Chhattisgarh to celebrate Diwali with security personnel and pay tribute to their sacrifices, selfless service and unwavering commitment to the nation, the Prime Minister’s Office said on Sunday.
The visit carries a special significance as Bastar, once considered a stronghold of Left-Wing Extremism, is now witnessing a transformation, with development gaining momentum in an area that had long been affected by Naxal violence.
Announcing his visit in a post on social media platform X, Modi said he was looking forward to celebrating the festival of lights with the personnel deployed in the region and saluting their courage and dedication.
“Heading to Bastar to celebrate Diwali with our brave security forces. This is an area where Naxalism once held sway and now, development is flourishing. I am going to salute our brave security personnel for their sacrifices, selfless service and unwavering devotion to the nation,” the Prime Minister said.
In his accompanying message in Hindi, Modi said, “Deepawali ke pavan avsar par Bastar ja raha hoon. Kal tak jahan Naxaliyon ka kahar tha wahan aaj vikas ki bahaar hai. Veer jawanon, unke balidan, tyaag aur tapasya ko naman karne ja raha hoon.”
The Prime Minister's message sought to underline the changing situation in Bastar, where security operations against Maoist insurgents have been accompanied by efforts to expand infrastructure, connectivity, education, healthcare and other development initiatives.
The region, comprising several districts in southern Chhattisgarh, has for decades been among the principal centres of Maoist activity, with security forces facing considerable challenges in combating insurgency and protecting civilians. The government has repeatedly emphasised that restoring peace and establishing the reach of administration and development in remote areas are central to its strategy against Left-Wing Extremism.
Modi's decision to spend Diwali with security personnel also highlights the government's recognition of the sacrifices made by forces deployed in difficult and often hostile conditions. His visit is intended to honour their service and convey solidarity with personnel who remain away from their families while performing their duties to safeguard the country.
By linking the festival of lights with Bastar's changing circumstances, the Prime Minister has also sought to project the region's transition from a prolonged period of violence and insecurity towards peace, development and greater opportunities for its people.
