Poland begins national mourning as mass shooting in Krakow leaves six dead and multiple injured

Krakow, Nov 8 (UNI) Poland has begun several days of national mourning following a rare mass shooting in the southern city of Krakow that killed at least six people and injured 16 others, with authorities investigating a possible terrorist attack and pointing to the suspect's alleged far-right sympathies.
Three more bodies were subsequently discovered at the suspect's family home in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, around 120 miles north-east of Krakow. Police identified the victims as his sister, mother and father.
The killings have shocked a country with some of Europe's strictest firearms regulations. Leading Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita described the attack as an event that "brutally ends an era in which Poland was considered a safe island".
Police began receiving reports of gunfire at around 3pm local time on Saturday after a 25-year-old Polish man drove into Krakow's historic main market square and opened fire indiscriminately. Four women and two men were killed, according to city police.
The suspect, who was wearing military-style clothing, used what police described as military weapons, Deputy Inspector Katarzyna Cisło told TVN24. Authorities also recovered numerous weapons and ammunition from his vehicle.
Police shot and wounded the suspect before taking him to hospital, where he underwent several operations. He remained in a stable but critical condition. Investigators said they were not looking for any other perpetrators.
Polish prosecutors said on Sunday that it was highly likely the killings in Krakow and those at the family home in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski had been carried out by the same individual, although investigations were continuing.
Eleven firearms were recovered from the two locations, a prosecution service spokesperson said. The number corresponded with the weapons permits issued to the suspect and his father.
Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz rejected reports that the suspect had served in the military, saying he had "never had anything to do with the military".
The motive for the killings remains under investigation. However, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said the suspect appeared fascinated by far-right ideologies and held "very radical views".
Two police officers were among those injured during the attack. Both underwent surgery and were in stable condition.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk praised their response, saying the officers had "likely saved many lives, without regard for the risk of losing their own".
The injured also included five foreign nationals from Austria, Germany, Portugal, Russia and Britain, according to an Interior Ministry spokesperson.
Krakow's main market square, surrounded by cafés and bars, is one of the city's busiest tourist areas and attracts millions of visitors annually. A bullet struck a tram during the shooting, shattering the driver's window, although no one aboard was injured.
The suspect also shot two horses pulling carriages in the city centre, according to animal welfare organisation OTOZ Animals. Both animals survived, received veterinary treatment and were removed from the area.
A quiet mist covered the city on Sunday morning as police maintained a heavy presence around the square, which remained largely cordoned off alongside nearby shops and streets.
Regional governor Krzysztof Klęczar described the attack as an act of "immense evil", telling reporters that Krakow had endured a difficult night.
The attack also prompted concerns over the spread of misinformation online. Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski said authorities had detected increased disinformation activity following the shooting, prompting Poland's Centre for Combating Disinformation to enter emergency monitoring mode.
"Verified and confirmed information comes exclusively from the authorities and institutions responsible for ensuring safety and establishing the circumstances of this terrible tragedy," he said on X.
President Karol Nawrocki expressed his condolences, saying his thoughts were with the victims, those injured and their families.
Krakow Mayor Łukasz Gibała declared a period of mourning in the city until November 11. Poland's neighbouring countries, including the Czech Republic and Ukraine, also sent messages of condolence.
