Police arrest Imran Khan's sister in Lahore ahead of PTI protest march

Lahore, Sept 20 (UNI) Pakistani police arrested Aleema Khan, the sister of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, at her home in Lahore on Sunday, days before his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party plans to hold a protest march to Islamabad.
Aleema Khan was detained under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance, 1960. A notification issued by Lahore's district administration said she had been ordered to remain in detention for 30 days, The News International quoted party sources as syaing.
The notification said intelligence reports indicated that her presence in public could pose a "grave threat to public safety."
Aleema was leaving her home on Upper Mall to go to a gym when she was taken into custody. She was later shifted to Kot Lakhpat jail, sources said.
Noreen Niazi, another sister of Imran Khan, told Geo News that Aleema was detained as she left her home and that the family had been informed she was being taken to Kot Lakhpat jail.
"I do not know why they are so worried that they are arresting women as well," Noreen said.
She added that PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan had contacted her to ask about the circumstances surrounding Aleema's arrest.
"We are not frightened by such measures and will always continue striving for our brother," she said, according to The News International.
The arrest comes ahead of a PTI-organised march to Islamabad on September 27, with the party demanding the release of Imran Khan, who has been in jail in connection with several cases.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has already said that the government would take all necessary measures to prevent the protest march.
Zulfi Bukhari, a close aide to Imran Khan, condemned Aleema's arrest, calling it "absolutely despicable" and saying the development showed the government was concerned about the planned protest.
Party Chairman Barrister Gohar also condemned the arrest and said the party's planned march would remain peaceful.
"We have always made it clear that our march will be peaceful and political," he said, adding that PTI intended to pursue its constitutional and political demands through peaceful means.
"We do not want any kind of confrontation or violence," he said.
Gohar called for Aleema Khan's immediate release and said the party would announce its response to the arrest.
Earlier, Gohar said PTI remained open to negotiations with the government, although he described the current political environment as "cold" and said previous efforts had made little progress.
He also criticised a recent Islamabad High Court ruling concerning the planned march. The court directed provincial governments and chief ministers to ensure that government resources were not used to facilitate participation in protests heading towards Islamabad.
The court also said provincial governments should ensure that public servants were not compelled to participate in any such march.
On Saturday, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed directed police officers not to facilitate any march, rally or procession heading towards the federal capital.
Gohar said PTI did not want the situation to develop into a confrontation between the people and police of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
"We will not break any law during the protest, nor will we block roads," he said.
He also assured that government resources would not be used for the party's planned march towards Islamabad.UNI AAB
