Pooja Singh bags historic women’s high jump bronze at Asian Games

Aichi-Nagoya, Sept 29 (UNI) India’s Pooja Singh broke new ground in the women’s high jump, winning a bronze medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Tuesday with a best clearance of 1.84m.
The 19-year-old national record holder produced a flawless start, clearing 1.70m, 1.75m, 1.80m and 1.84m on her first attempts. She then failed three times at 1.87m, but her clean record at 1.84m was enough to secure the bronze on countback.
Four other athletes also remained perfect at 1.84m, making the battle for the podium particularly tight.
Pooja’s medal marks India’s first Asian Games medal in the women’s high jump. She had finished sixth in the event at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games with a 1.80m clearance, making Tuesday’s podium finish a significant improvement.
The Haryana athlete entered the Games as the Asian champion, having won the 2025 Asian Championships, and had also claimed silver at the 2026 Asian Indoor Championships.
Her career-best clearance of 1.93m in 2026 is the national record and Asian U20 record, underlining the rapid rise of the 19-year-old high jumper.
Pooja had also won the Asian U20 title earlier this year with a 1.93m clearance, further establishing herself among Asia’s leading young high jumpers.
Compatriot Supriya Sindigere Basavaraju finished 12th after clearing 1.75m.
The bronze added another athletics medal to India’s haul on a busy final day of the athletics programme.
