Pregnant minor dies by suicide after allegedly being raped in J&K’s Handwara

Srinagar, June 20 (UNI) J&K Police has arrested a 17 year–old boy for allegedly raping a minor who committed suicide in north Kashmir.


Police said a minor girl on the night of June 5 attempted suicide by hanging at her home and was immediately shifted to SMHS Hospital, Srinagar, for medical treatment.

“Despite efforts, she succumbed,” police said, adding the victim was found to be six months pregnant at the time of the incident.

A case was registered on June 6, under sections 64 BNS, 5(J)(II) and 6 of the POCSO Act and an in-depth investigation was initiated.


“During the course of investigation, several suspects were summoned for questioning. Through sustained investigation and comprehensive forensic analysis, particularly DNA profiling, an individual from Gulgam, Kupwara, was conclusively identified,” police said, adding the DNA report confirmed his involvement by establishing him as the biological father of the foetus.


The accused has been arrested and taken into custody, and further legal proceedings are underway, police said
