Punjab BJP women's wing protests against Cong over insult to women cops

Chandigarh, Oct 11 (UNI) The Punjab BJP Mahila Morcha staged a protest against the Congress in Chandigarh on Sunday, accusing its leadership of failing to uphold women's dignity and demanding accountability over allegations of inappropriate conduct towards female police personnel during opposition demonstrations in New Delhi.
Led by Punjab BJP Mahila Morcha president Jai Inder Kaur, women activists and party workers gathered in Sector 37, raised slogans against the Congress and criticised Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over the controversy surrounding the treatment of women police officers during recent protests against the Election Commission.
The protesters said that the dignity, safety and self-respect of women must remain above political considerations and that public representatives should be held accountable for their conduct during demonstrations.
Kaur said the BJP's women's wing would not tolerate any insult to women and would continue raising its voice against conduct that undermined their dignity.
"Women’s dignity and respect cannot be compromised," she said, according to the position expressed by the protesters. The wording is a rendering of that position rather than a verified verbatim quotation.
The protest followed a political confrontation in New Delhi, where BJP leaders accused Rahul Gandhi and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of behaving inappropriately towards female police personnel during opposition demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The BJP cited videos circulating on social media to support its allegations. The footage, however, has not independently established the allegations of misconduct against the Congress leaders.
The opposition demonstrations were organised amid allegations concerning the revision of electoral rolls and demands for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. Congress and other opposition parties have accused the Election Commission of bias, allegations rejected by the BJP and election authorities.
Sunday's protest came a day after the Chandigarh BJP Mahila Morcha, led by its president Sonam Verma, organised a separate demonstration against Rahul Gandhi.
During Saturday's protest, BJP workers marched from the party's Sector 33 headquarters towards Congress Bhawan in Sector 35 but were stopped by police barricades before reaching their destination.
BJP leaders said the right to protest was fundamental to democracy but insisted that political leaders must respect the law and the dignity of police personnel performing their duties.
Former Chandigarh BJP president Sanjay Tandon said respect for women was fundamental to a civilised society and that democratic protests must remain within the bounds of law and public decorum.
The successive demonstrations have intensified the political confrontation between the BJP and Congress over the conduct of opposition leaders during protests in the national capital.
