Four arrested after gunfight with Haryana Police over Chandigarh carjacking, two injured

Palwal, Oct 11 (UNI) Four suspected members of an interstate robbery gang allegedly involved in a carjacking at gunpoint in Chandigarh were arrested after an exchange of fire with Haryana Police in Palwal district, leaving two of the accused injured, police said on Sunday.
The suspects, who have 23 criminal cases registered against them collectively in Punjab, were intercepted near the Prithla-Chhapraula road after Chandigarh Police alerted their Haryana counterparts about the movement of a stolen white Swift Dzire towards Palwal.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Narendra Singh Khatana told reporters that a Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) team led by Inspector Jagminder Singh was patrolling near Alhapur Mor on National Highway-19 when it received information from Chandigarh Police Crime Cell Inspector Jasvir Singh about four armed men who had allegedly hijacked a Swift Dzire bearing registration number CH-01AA-0169.
The suspects had reportedly removed the vehicle's registration plates and entered the Gadpuri area, where they were allegedly planning another crime.
Acting on the information, police formed two teams and launched a search operation. The vehicle was spotted near a temple on the Prithla-Chhapraula road.
When police blocked the car, its four occupants allegedly abandoned it and fled towards nearby bushes.
"The suspects opened fire at the police team when they were asked to surrender. Despite repeated warnings, they again pointed their weapons at police personnel, prompting retaliatory firing in self-defence," Khatana said.
Two accused, identified as Lucky, a resident of Shakti Nagar in Barnala, Punjab, and Roshanacharya, a Nepalese national residing in Barnala, sustained bullet injuries to their legs. Both were admitted to Civil Hospital, Palwal, under police supervision.
The other two arrested suspects were identified as Sunny, a resident of Sherwa Road in Barnala, and Khushpreet Singh, also from Barnala.
Police recovered the allegedly stolen Swift Dzire, a .315-bore country-made firearm, another country-made pistol, four live cartridges, two spent cartridge cases, the removed registration plates and three mobile phones.
According to police, preliminary verification revealed that Lucky faces six criminal cases involving narcotics, attempted murder and illegal weapons, while Roshanacharya has nine cases relating to narcotics, liquor smuggling and firearms offences.
Sunny faces three cases, while five cases involving offences including attempted murder and illegal possession of weapons are registered against Khushpreet Singh.
A fresh case has been registered at Gadpuri police station under provisions relating to attempted murder, obstruction of public servants and the Arms Act.
Police said the suspects would be produced before a court, where their custodial remand would be sought to investigate the Chandigarh carjacking, identify possible accomplices and establish their involvement in other crimes.
Palwal Superintendent of Police Dr Deepti Garg warned that armed criminals attempting to threaten public safety would face stringent action.
"Palwal Police are fully committed to ensuring public safety. Anyone attempting to challenge law and order through armed violence will face strict legal action," she said.
Further investigation is underway in coordination with Chandigarh Police to trace the suspects' alleged interstate criminal network.UNI KK AAB
