Punjab Vigilance widens Majithia assets probe, flags Rs 700 cr in financial dealings

Chandigarh, Oct 28 (UNI) Punjab's anti-corruption agency has widened its investigation into alleged disproportionate assets linked to former minister Bikram Singh Majithia, filing a fresh chargesheet that scrutinises financial transactions worth about Rs 700 crore and names several individuals and companies.
The supplementary chargesheet, submitted to a Mohali court on Wednesday, names Gurmehar Singh, Majithia's brother-in-law Gajpat Singh Grewal, Harpreet Gulati, Amardeep Singh and 10 companies, bringing more alleged financial links under judicial scrutiny.
The Vigilance Bureau alleges that the transactions formed part of financial dealings under investigation during 2007-2017, a period when Majithia held influential positions in Punjab's former Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP government.
The Rs 700 crore figure relates to transactions examined by investigators and does not represent a judicial finding that the entire amount constitutes illegally acquired wealth.
The latest filing adds to the prosecution's case against Majithia, who was arrested on June 25, 2025, under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Investigators had earlier submitted a voluminous chargesheet in August 2025, detailing bank accounts, financial records and statements gathered during the investigation.
The former minister remained in custody for more than seven months after his bail applications were rejected by a Mohali court and subsequently by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The Supreme Court granted him regular bail on February 2, 2026, although the criminal proceedings remain pending.
The fresh chargesheet shifts attention to the wider network of individuals and corporate entities whose financial dealings are now being examined as part of the case.
The allegations are yet to be established in court.
