Jaipur, June 17 (UNI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has requested the Central government to expedite the implementation of three major water projects linked to the Chenab River Basin.
Official sources said Sharma wrote to Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil, urging him to take immediate action on these proposals.
The projects aim to divert excess water from Himalayan rivers like Chenab to eastern-flowing rivers such as the Beas, Ravi, and Ujh. This will benefit not only several states in North India but also Rajasthan.
The Chief Minister highlighted that Rajasthan requires approximately 1.0 million acre-feet (MAF) of water for drinking purposes, 1.0 MAF for irrigation, and 0.2 MAF for industrial needs.
The projects will channel excess water into the Beas and Satluj rivers, benefiting Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, and Rajasthan. This will augment water supply to the Indira Gandhi Canal, providing relief to a large population in western Rajasthan for irrigation and drinking purposes. It will also facilitate water supply to industrial areas, potentially leading to new investments and employment opportunities.
