Rajasthan sees significant decline in total fertility rate

Jaipur, June 6 (UNI) Rajasthan has witnessed a notable decline in its Total Fertility Rate (TFR), which has dropped to 2.0 from 2.4, a significant achievement towards reaching the replacement level.

A media workshop organised here by Vikalp, a technical partner to the state government, highlighted that the modern contraceptive prevalence rate (mCPR) has also increased to 62.1%, indicating a growing awareness and proactive approach towards family planning among couples.

The workshop aimed to inform media representatives about the changing behaviors and priorities related to family planning and maternity in rural India, particularly in Rajasthan.

Surendra Singh Shekhawat, Project Director of the Family Welfare Department, Rajasthan, said that women are now increasingly adopting temporary contraceptive methods.

The percentage of women adopting modern contraceptives has increased from 18.6% (NFHS-4) to 31.5% (NFHS-5) among women with 0-1 child.

The use of temporary and reversible methods has also increased to 19.5% (NFHS-5), indicating that women are now opting for temporary solutions before permanent ones.

Dr Suman Mittal, a retired professor from SMS Hospital, stressed the importance of delaying the first childbirth and maintaining a gap of at least three years between two children. This not only improves the health of the mother but also reduces maternal mortality.

The Vikalp project is promoting awareness about various contraceptive methods through community platforms like door-to-door counseling, mother-in-law and daughter-in-law conferences, and Village Health Sanitation and Nutrition Days (VHSNDs).

Arun Nair, State Project Director of Vikalp, said that when couples delay the birth of their first child, it gives the mother time to prepare herself physically and mentally for pregnancy. Similarly, maintaining a gap between two children reduces the risk of complications and strengthens the emotional bond with the first child.

The project is also providing a toll-free helpline service, 'Sakhi', for information and counseling on temporary contraceptive methods. The government’s efforts are enabling newlywed couples and those with one child to make informed decisions about delaying pregnancy and spacing between children.

With increasing awareness about contraceptive methods like Antara injection, contraceptive pills, IUCD, and condoms, women are better equipped to prepare themselves for motherhood, leading to improved maternal and child health and overall family well-being. UNI XC AKT SSP
