RCB stampede: CM hikes ex-gratia to Rs 25 lakh

Bengaluru, June 7 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday announced an increase in the ex-gratia compensation for the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic stampede at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The compensation amount has been enhanced from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 25 lakh per family.
The stampede occurred on June four during a victory celebration for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) after their maiden IPL title win. A massive crowd, reportedly numbering between two to three lakh people, had gathered outside the stadium, which has a capacity of only 35,000. The crowd surge led to a deadly stampede, resulting in 11 deaths and injuries to over 50 people.
In a bid to support the affected families, the Chief Minister stated that the increased compensation reflects the government’s commitment to stand with the bereaved in this hour of grief. He has also ordered a magisterial inquiry to ascertain the circumstances that led to the tragedy and to recommend preventive measures for the future.
In addition to the state government's announcement, the RCB franchise has pledged Rs 10 lakh for each of the deceased's families and launched the "RCB Cares" fund to support those injured in the incident.
The tragedy has triggered a political storm, with the opposition demanding accountability from the government for the lapses in crowd control. Former minister B Sriramulu demanded action against senior ministers and officials, alleging negligence.
Meanwhile, five senior police officers have been suspended pending investigation, as the government takes stock of the administrative and security failures that contributed to the disaster.
The stampede has cast a pall over RCB’s landmark victory, drawing urgent attention to the need for better public safety measures during high-profile events.
