Rising e-waste alongside digital growth is a new environmental challenge: Dr Rajeshwar Singh

Lucknow, Oct 6 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh BJP MLA Dr Rajeshwar Singh said that for a rapidly digitalising country like India, e-waste management is no longer just an environmental issue, but also a matter of public health, resource conservation and the future economy.
He said the digital revolution has transformed lives, but it has also created a rapidly growing e-waste challenge.
According to the Global E-waste Monitor 2024, the world generated a record 62 million tonnes of e-waste in 2022, with only 22.3% formally collected and recycled. Global e-waste is projected to reach 82 million tonnes by 2030.
The MLA said here on Tuesday that a major part of this crisis comes from small, low-cost electronic products—wireless earbuds, charging cables, electronic toys and other gadgets. Often purchased impulsively and forgotten in drawers or thrown directly into household waste, these products contain valuable materials that are lost when they are not properly recycled.
Singh stressed that “Reduce, Reuse, Repair and Recycle” must become a people’s movement. What appears to be a small gadget can collectively represent millions of tonnes of lost resources.
Initiatives such as Net Zero Sarojininagar and Environment Warriors can help build awareness, encourage responsible consumption and strengthen public participation in environmental protection.
He called for e-waste management to become an integral part of the vision for a cleaner, greener and Net Zero India—where every discarded gadget becomes an opportunity to recover resources rather than create pollution.
