Saffron counter: Tripura BJP holds mega rally supporting SIR

Agartala, Oct 31 (UNI) A day after the INDIA Bloc held a protest rally in Agartala, the ruling BJP in Tripura organised a large rally in the city on Saturday, demanding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls to safeguard the voting rights of genuine Indian citizens.
Thousands of people, mostly women, participated in the rally and raised slogans against the Congress–CPI-M alliance in the state. Participants accused the INDIA Bloc parties of seeking to undermine the country’s democratic spirit and sovereignty, alleging that their opposition to the revision process could deprive genuine Indian citizens of their electoral rights.
Addressing the gathering, BJP state president Abhishek Debroy sharply criticised the opposition parties and questioned the motives behind the INDIA Bloc’s Save Democracy rally, which focused on a five-point charter of demands. He alleged that the opposition was deliberately generating controversy over SIR as part of a broader attempt to destabilise the government.
Debroy described SIR as a constitutionally mandated exercise and maintained that it had been conducted across the country at least ten times during Congress rule. He accused the Congress of adopting a contradictory position, alleging that the party was now strongly opposing a process it had previously overseen because of its repeated electoral setbacks.
Continuing his attack, Debroy portrayed the INDIA Bloc as a grouping of the Congress, Communist parties and what he derisively called the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). He alleged that these parties had come together to disrupt the government’s functioning and undermine its development initiatives.
He expressed confidence that the people would reject what he described as the alliance’s efforts to destabilise the country and create anarchy. The BJP leader further accused the Congress and its allies of attempting to obstruct development.
Debroy also claimed that opposition parties had hatched a conspiracy to bring about a change of government through upheaval similar to developments in Bangladesh and Nepal. He presented the controversy surrounding SIR as part of a wider political campaign against the government.
Concluding his address, he urged people not to be misled by the INDIA Bloc leadership’s campaign against the revision exercise. He appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and uphold India’s democratic traditions and constitutional values.
